課程概述

This course probes the dynamic world of late-19th and early 20th-century America, when gargantuan corporations muscled out partnerships and family firms; workers staged rebellions against the 1%; white supremacy, patriarchy and notions of civilization competed with egalitarian movements designed to uplift African Americans and women; and middle class reformers cried foul when American individualism appeared threatened by a new modern order they helped create. We will focus our attention on the tensions that erupted over a new American economy based upon mass production and consumption, and specifically the conflict that ensued over the boundaries between public and private power; individualism and community; and democracy and capitalism. Throughout this period, Americans asked critical questions about the relationship of government to society and the nature of its responsibilities and obligations to American citizens at a time when individual opportunity seemed threatened by the emergence of large corporations. Our aim in this course is to untangle the meaning of these developments both for the Americans experiencing them at the time and the Americans (and others) who have been forced to grapple with their consequences ever since then.

In this course, we shall work to:
o Map the causes and effects of corporate capitalism, including its role in redefining a social contract and structuring culture, social relations, and politics.
o Compare the experiences of diverse groups of Americans during a period of intense and rapid economic and social change.
o Interrogate and interpret primary and secondary sources relating to the era.
o Construct and articulate logical arguments based upon evidence.

Participation 
10% 
Participation grades will be based upon attendance, thoughtful contributions to class discussion and preparation.  
2. 
Primary Source Analysis Essays 
30% 
Students will compose six short essays that develop an analysis of individual primary sources. The assignments will be scaffolded so that we build to ever-more sophisticated and contextualized interpretations of our sources.  
3. 
Bellamy Paper 
15% 
Students will write a brief paper (3-5 pages, double-spaced) that addresses a prompt on the novel, Looking Backward, 1887-2000 by Edward Bellamy.  
4. 
Response Paper 
15% 
Students will write one response paper to a secondary source reading. The paper will require them to address a prompt and will encourage the development of a thesis with accompanying evidence to support it. 
5. 
Oral Presentation  
10% 
Students will practice their English and oral presentation skills by preparing a short talk on one or more primary documents. Presentations will be made conference-style, and thus, students will be grouped onto panels. Each student on the panel will have an allotted time for a presentation and then the entire panel will field questions from their classmates and professor.  
6. 
Final Exam  
20% 
Students will take a final exam that will assess their mastery of key terms and topics in late 19th and early 20th century American history; ability to analyze primary sources; and ability to synthesize material in an essay that includes an argument with evidence.
